On Tuesday the school went on a trip to Te Awhina Marae. We stayed the night at the marae, I had the worst spot because people kept on stepping on my head. It was interesting to learn about how they made the carvings and how a church got burnt down by a candle. The church is about 100 years old. We had a massive dinner, it was basically a feast, it was great. Then we went to the the beach and went home then fell asleep.
It was awesome, really fun, and sort of scary staying over night but over all it was great.
Kia ora. We are a bunch of Year 6, 7 and 8 kids at Mahana School, and we're looking forward to sharing our work on this blog. Please leave us some comments!

Hot Air Ballooning
In our class we are making hot air balloons with Mr Neal. Yesterday we made the canopy. Today we are melting the candles onto the tin foil and attaching the straws. Yesterday we tested Mr Neal's hot air balloon named "Casper" outside on the tennis court. Casper inflated, lifted off the ground ever so slightly then went up in flames. Mr Neal said it was a step towards success. Today when everyone has completed their balloons we plan to test them outside on the tennis court.

night games
In the night in the grave yard we were playing spot light we started at the fence and then
we sneaked of into the night and hide and when the spotters came to get us we had to drop
to the ground so they wouldn't find us the first people in were Tiarne, Hunter and Lucy we . had to spot people before they get back to base the base was the hall that we where we were staying
personally I think the spotters were cheating because they were shining the light in the two places
that we could get out from! it was sort of annoying but in the end we got to base so it was awesome.
night. we had to hide behind Graves the spotters couldn't find us it was so so so cool

West Coast Birthday Treat
I went on the glacier because it was my birthday present from my Mum. It was freezing and there was a mini blizzard with rain, not snow. We went in a tunnel that was large enough to fit a car inside it. About 400 years ago the glacier was 2kms longer than it is now. Walking on the glacier was exciting and fun!
We also did goldpanning and I found some gold at Shantytown. I made a knife at Barrytown which you can check out on my next blog post!

We Will Remember Them

I'm sure you will know about the Pike River mining disaster. Well, our school choose to do something, so we sent them down 29 tissue flowers which we made. The flowers were very colourful. We put them in a black box and glued their names on it. Mr Neal took it to Hampden Street school because a teacher was going down to the ceremony. We hope all the families are OK.
